Jonathan

Great usability.

I can't be the only one who looks at what others around me have before ordering, or sees what my dinner partner has just received and wishes I'd ordered it instead of whatever's just been put in front of me...

Anyway: 'cultural ignorance'? Bloody Londoners! ;-)

Mind you, I asked for mushy peas with my fish supper up here in Scotland recently and got a funny look.

Cultural ignorance? There looks to be a few different European cultures represented with those beer glasses. Perhaps the addition of a nice, tall glass of water would've helped.

Regardless, I like it. Pictures sell food.

Jonathan, salt and sauce or salt and vinegar?

Great Usability and Pandering to Cultural Ignorance.

Let's face it. We need both.

If I am going to choose an ice-cream flavour I want to see it. When I go to McDonalds I get pictures. Why not a real restaurant? I think this is a great idea.

At the same time, I understand why you ask if this is pandering to cultural ignorance. We need it though. If I am honest with you I would admit that I wouldn't recognise 90% of those dishes by name alone. Would you?

Good on them. Which restaurant is this?

Ben

The cultural ignorance bit is because the restaurant was in Barcelona and the menu is designed to help people who can't order in Spanish.

Greg - you make a good point about McDonalds.

Ben

Actually this reminds me of this: http://noisydecentgraphics.typepad.com/design/2006/11/great_design_pr.html

and dont forget that Spanish are alergic to foreign languages... so its easyer for you to point at the image then to find someone that speaks english in barcelona.

BTW, good pojnt Ben... its almost the same situation. so it makes perfect sence to me.

Mat

Great design. If the food looks good enough, people will buy it.

and re: Macdonalds, just because they show a picture doesn't mean you know what's actually in it...
